The volunteer treasurers, bookkeepers and other directors of charities and not-for-profit organizations face a growing demand for openness and accountability in their financial statements, federal tax returns and their communications to the general public. And, often, as volunteers, they have a limited understanding of the core accounting issues involved. This workshop, designed for the director who has no or limited accounting background, discusses the emerging issues and how to respond to them.

Approach:

This workshop provides attendees with the basic tools needed to achieve their financial responsibilities to their boards of directors and to their charity or not-for-profit organization through discussion, lecture and exercises.

Topics Covered:

  • Director’s liability and accountability – how Enron and other scandals have impacted charitable and not-for-profit organizations
  • Basic understanding of core concepts – debits and credits, simple journals, etc.
  • Modern accounting software
  • Recording the receipt of funds and tracking related disbursements
  • Understanding and interpreting financial statements – what the treasurer needs to tell the board
  • Overview of the Federal T3010A Registered Charity Information Return
  • Techniques for surviving an audit
Duration: Approximately 5 hours plus breaks
